Whilst cleaning out my folders and backing up my files, I stumbled across a little project a friend and I completed this past spring that I thought my fellow Lissuns might enjoy. Granted, it wasn't an "official" project for any class - but this is what happens when professors don't keep their students busy enough with papers.
Having gone out a few times with friends over the course of my collegiate career, it was inevitable that I should notice the wide variety of mixed drinks offered at most bars nowadays and the fact that said drinks are often named after people. Well, thought I, why not create drinks to bear the names of my favorite characters from POB's books? So...that's exactly what my friend Grace and I did. That said, take POB, add in a bar crawl from the previous weekend, extreme boredom, and two girls with an odd sense of humor and you get the following.

Sophie's Bread and Butter Miss
Laura Fielding's Hors d'ouevres
Lisa Baer
Jack and Stephen both get two because, well, they rather deserve it, I think.
The Doctor Maturin
Inspired by Stephen's love of coffee and the fact that he took coffee-flavored ice cream with Laura Fielding in Treason's Harbor.
1 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
1 oz Bailey's Irish cream
3 scoops vanilla ice cream
Crushed ice
Mix in a blender by adding ice cream first, followed by the Bailey's and then the Kahlua. Blend until smooth; pour and serve with a dusting of ground coffee beans.
The Don Esteban
Inspired by his citrus tree with the mixed fruit and his Catalan heritage... Also, the floating lemon in the blue drink is supposed to represent how many times Stephen has gotten a dunking in the books.
1 oz Gran Torres (May substitute Grand Marnier based on availability)
1 oz Blue Curaçao
Lemonade
1 lemon wedge
Pour Torres and Curaçao over ice in a highball glass, fill with lemonade; let the lemon wedge float, and serve.
The Jack-in-Port (Or, Jack Ashore)
(Inspired by the fact that the RN first popularized the drinking of Port in England and well...because it was fun to do a Jackish pun. Sort of. The wit behind the name is all Grace. I am too dim for that sort of nift.)
3 oz Tawny Port
1 oz brandy
4 1/2 oz orange juice
1 tsp Grenadine
1 cherry
Pour over crushed ice in a double rocks glass; serve with a cherry skewered on a cocktail sword.
And now we get into the shots... Grace just-as-wittily came up with some pretty funny shot jokes too. Double-shotted and all that...you shoot your drink, slam the glass on the bar, and yell "RELOAD!"
The Lucky Jack Aubrey
(Inspired by Jack's equal love of coffee and the 24k gold flakes in Goldschlager which represents all his glorious prize money.)
1/3 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
1/3 oz Amaretto almond liqueur
1/3 oz Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps
Layer ingredients in order listed in a shot glass and serve.
The William Babbington
(Inspired by the rum Babbs was served by Diana in PC before they set out for the ball at Melbury.)
1/3 Part Captain Morgan Spiced Rum
1/3 Part Grenadine Syrup
1/3 Part 7up
Mix with ice, strain into a shot glass, and serve.
The William Mowett
(Because Mowett to me is cuddly and cozy and comforting...this just seemed to fit.)
1 part Scotch whiskey
1 part apple cider
Grated cinnamon
Mix whiskey and cider in a shot glass, garnish with cinnamon and serve.
The Four Seamen (Or, Bonden, Killick, Plaice, and Davies)
(Inspired by the grog ration and Killick's obsession with silver.)
1/4 oz Bacardi Gold Rum
1/4 oz Bacardi Silver Rum
1/4 oz Bacardi O Rum
1/4 oz Bacardi Limon Rum
Granulated Sugar
1 Lime Wedge
Mix rums in a shot glass. Lick your thumb, sprinkle sugar on it, lick sugar, shoot the rum, and then bite into the lime wedge.
And now the shots end.
The Tom Pullings...
...Is a variation on a Tom Collins, but, it just seemed to fit dear Tom so well.
2 oz gin
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 tsp superfine sugar
3 oz club soda
1 slice lime
In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the gin, lime juice, and sugar. Shake well. Strain into a Collins glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the club soda. Stir and garnish with the lime slice.
The Diana Villiers
(Inspired by Diana's passion and sophistication. As Grace said, champagne is the diamond of alcohol.)
3 oz passion fruit juice
Champagne
Pour passion fruit juice over ice in a highball glass. Fill with chilled champagne, stir gently, and serve.
The Sophie Williams
(Inspired by Sophie's sweetness, her lovely complexion, and gold hair.)
1 oz Swiss chocolate almond liqueur
1/2 oz Frangelico Hazlenut liqueur
1/2 oz Goldschlager Cinnamon Schnapps
Milk
Mix the liquor in a highball glass half-filled with ice. Fill with milk, stir gently, and serve.
There are also non-alcoholic variations for those of you who don't drink or are underaged.
The Doctor Maturin
1 oz strongly brewed coffee
1/2 oz cream
3 scoops of vanilla ice cream
Crushed ice
Mix in a blender by adding ice cream first, followed by the cream and then the coffee. Blend until smooth; pour and serve with a dusting of ground coffee beans.

Lemonade
1 lemon wedge
Pour the syrup over ice in a highball glass. Fill with lemonade, let the lemon wedge float, and serve.
The Jack-in-Port (Or, Jack Ashore)

1 oz Welch's sparkling red grape juice
4 1/2 oz orange juice
1 tsp Grenadine
1 cherry
Pour over crushed ice in a double rocks glass; serve with a the cherry skewered on a cocktail sword.
The Lucky Jack Aubrey
1 oz strongly brewed coffee
1/2 oz Amaretto almond syrup
1/2 oz Monin cinnamon syrup
Gold leaf flakes

The Tom Pullings

1 oz fresh lime juice
3 oz club soda
1 oz Sprite or 7up

1/2 oz rum flavor
1/2 oz Sprite or 7up

Splash of Monin hazelnut syrup
Splash of Amaretto almond syrup
Milk
Gold leaf flakes*
Mix the syrups in a highball glass half-filled with ice. Fill with milk, stir gently, sprinkle in the gold, and serve.
*I think you may be able to find gold leaf either at a craft store or at a specialty cooking store.

Boiled Shit and Boobies Blood
Dave Phillips asks, "But where is the drink based on boiled shit? (Ch. 6, HMS Surprise)

The Killick - Heather Davies
Pineapple, tequila, saltwater,worm*... true Killick.
Which it'll cure that head-cold, now won't it? Drink it down, Sir!
*Which the worm was suggested by Bruce Trinque
Shoshana Hathaway
Killick ...likes leftover wine, or, I would assume, the tail end of the bottle (if there is any left) So ...mixed wines? Um ...ew. Never mind, LOL! Wine and grog together is ...pretty unthinkable ...but he makes good coffee, (at least when the rats haven't been at it), so ...tequilla and coffee?
(And maybe add a bit of Tia Maria, just for fun.)
Sara Waterson
I'd like to suggest an alternative cocktail for the Killick, whose spirit must I feel be gin, and whose drink-of-name must surely have a certain wince-making ingredient.
